Concealed Carry Weapons

APPLICATION PROCESS

Residents of Rio Blanco County may submit applications in person at our Meeker and Rangely offices. If you are not a resident of Rio Blanco County, you must apply for (or renew) your concealed handgun permit in the county where you reside.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

Application
This must be completed at the time of submission, but left unsigned. A Sheriff’s Office Designee must witness your signature.

Colorado Driver's License
The address on your driver’s license must match the address on the application; otherwise, you will need to provide proof of Rio Blanco County residency (vehicle registration, utility bill or bank statement). A copy of your driver’s license will be made and kept in your file.

Training documentation
Proof of your firearm training. A copy will be made-applicant keeps the original.

The following are accepted:
1. Evidence of experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competitions or current military service. 
2. Evidence that, at the time the application is submitted, the applicant is a certified instructor. 
3. Proof of honorable discharge from a branch of the United States Armed Forces within the three years preceding submittal of the application. 
4. Proof of honorable discharge from a branch of the United States Armed Forces that reflects pistol qualifications obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of the application. 
5. A certificate showing retirement from a Colorado Law Enforcement Agency that reflects pistol qualifications obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of the application. 
6. A training certificate from a "handgun training class" 

New applications require a training certificate from a concealed handgun training class taught by an instructor verified by a Colorado Sheriff’s Department and obtained within one year preceding submittal of the application. 

Renewal applications require a training certificate from a concealed handgun refresher class taught by an instructor verified by a Colorado Sheriff’s Department and obtained within 6 months prior to submitting the renewal application. 

Training certificates must contain:

  •  the name of the course and date of completion 
  •  the applicant's name 
  •  the instructor's printed name, original signature and verified instructor information including number (if assigned) and county of verification 

Please note: Online, home study or hunter safety courses will not be accepted.


FEES

This payment covers the Sheriff’s Office processing fee and the mandatory Colorado Bureau of Investigation background check.

New applications:   $102.50
Renewals:               $ 63.00

If application is submitted after expiration date, you will be charged an additional $15 to be included with the Sheriff’s processing fee. If you do not renew your permit within six months after the expiration date, it will be deemed permanently expired- you will need to re-apply as a new applicant and pay all applicable fees.

We accept cash, personal checks or money orders payable to RBC Sheriff
Credit and debit cards will incur an additional 3.99% vendor fee (minimum $3.99)


PHOTOGRAPH

A digital photo will be taken of you at the time your application is submitted.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS

  • If you move, you must complete the change of address form and provide the Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office with updated information.
  • If you move out of state, you must surrender your permit because it automatically becomes invalid once you become a resident of a different state.
