On November 19, 2019, the Rio Blanco County Commissioners adopted new landfill rates to go into effect January 1, 2020.
The Solid Waste Landfill fund has been using its fund balance (reserves) to cover expenses for the past few years, meaning that revenue collected has not offset the operating and capital expenditures of the fund. A completely depleted fund balance would mean a much higher rate for users, so in order to slow the use of the remaining fund balance (reserves) the Commissioners decided to implement a slightly higher rate in 2020. It is estimated that the increase will give a 14% boost to the overall revenue while decreasing landfill fees for those who self-haul.
Also, up until this year, the County had a variety of rates for different types of waste. The new rate, $40.00 per ton, will now be the same for any bulk waste. The Commissioners note the new rate is still less than area counties.
Residents may also see an increase in their household trash carts of an estimated $7.00 per month.
