The proposed changes to the Rio Blanco County building codes have brought forth many questions and misconceptions. In an effort to answer some of those questions, below is a simplified explanation of what the proposed changes include.
Business remains as usual for the Rio Blanco County Building Department and there are no proposed changes to the department.
All structures that are built will continue to be subject to all applicable state and federal building requirements (example: electrical, plumbing, etc.)
NO CHANGES are being made to the following:
- Any commercial or industrial building code requirements.
- Any building codes that are under the jurisdiction of Meeker or Rangely.
- Any code requirements for any building that is built with the intention of being a primary residence.
- Any parcels within 1 mile distance from the Town limits of either Rangely or Meeker, or are less than 2.5 acres.
- Requirements for filing of a use tax return.
Changes are proposed to ONLY the following:
- In rural Rio Blanco County, landowners that are building a structure that is NOT intended as a primary residence will be now be given the option to:
- Purchase a building permit and have an inspection done by Rio Blanco County staff as has been done in the recent past.
- Purchase a building permit and hire a private inspector that meets the credentials of the county.
